JSON Sidecar Privacy Policy
Effective date: August 29, 2026
JSON Sidecar is a local-first Chrome extension for formatting, escaping, searching, editing, and comparing JSON.
Data handled by the extension
JSON Sidecar handles only content that the user deliberately provides:
- JSON or other text pasted or typed into the editor.
- Text explicitly selected on a webpage when the user invokes JSON Sidecar from its toolbar icon or context menu.
This content may include website content or user-generated content, depending on what the user chooses to provide.
How data is used and stored
The provided text is used only to perform the extension's visible editing and transformation features. The most recent editor content is stored locally using Chrome extension storage so it can be restored when the side panel is reopened. A pending page selection may be held temporarily in session storage while the panel opens.
Content remains on the user's device until it is overwritten, cleared in the editor, removed through Chrome's extension data controls, or the extension is uninstalled.
Data transmission and sharing
JSON Sidecar:
- Does not transmit editor content or selected webpage text to the developer or any external server.
- Does not sell, share, or disclose user data to third parties.
- Does not use analytics, advertising, tracking, cookies, or remote code.
- Does not use user data for creditworthiness, lending, or purposes unrelated to its single JSON-editing purpose.
All JSON parsing, formatting, searching, editing, and comparison happens locally in Chrome.
Permissions
The extension uses narrowly scoped Chrome permissions to open its side panel, add user-invoked context-menu actions, read the current selection after an explicit user action, and retain editor content locally. It does not request broad website access or host permissions.
Changes
If this policy or the extension's data practices materially change, the updated policy and Chrome Web Store disclosures will be published before the change takes effect.
